Our Editor's Take

Herbs with Rosalee is a great resource for people looking for natural ways to feel healthier. Rosalee de la Forêt wishes to educate podcast listeners about the world of natural medicine. The host conveys complex ideas from herbalism and simplifies them into actionable advice.

In one episode, Forêt explores the many benefits of lavender. The host talks about using it for relaxation and to help with gas. In another episode, Forêt explains the usefulness of St. John's Wort. Those include the nervous system, the liver, the skin, and depression. But the host also discusses the side effects and ways to avoid them. The podcast provides a digestible yet comprehensive guide to the world of herbs. It can benefit those who are only beginning to learn and those with years of experience.

The host of Herbs with Rosalee has over fifteen years of experience in this field. Forêt is an herbal teacher who has provided online training to over 10,000 students. She also wrote two books about the topic, Alchemy of Herbs and Wild Remedies. Forêt has a passion for the natural world and loves sharing her knowledge. She understands that learning about herbs online can be challenging at times. Often, there is a lot of contradicting information. The host hopes to create a reliable source with her podcast. All of her advice is well-researched and derives from scientific studies. However, the podcast does not substitute for standard medical advice.

The program offers concise episodes where the host talks about a specific plant. For example, Forêt discusses how calendula is good for the skin, inflammation, and immunity. At the end of these episodes, the host also provides a recipe for listeners to try at home.

Forêt invites experts such as nutritionists, authors, and herbalists onto the podcast. In addition to discussing the specific herbs, the host questions how they first became interested in natural medicine. They talk about their journey into the field and the discoveries they made along the way on Herbs with Rosalee.

Health Benefits of Mullein with jim mcdonald
Feb 21 2024
Health Benefits of Mullein with jim mcdonald
Today’s episode is my third interview with jim mcdonald and it’s brimming with soooo much information about the health benefits of mullein (Verbascum spp). When jim told me he wanted to do a really long episode on mullein, I admittedly wasn’t prepared for how long he really wanted to go. But he told me that he never feels like he gets to truly share all that he wants to share about mullein. And who am I to deny him (or you, for that matter!) that opportunity? So grab your cup of tea, get cozy and bring your notepad and pencil because there’s a lot of mullein goodness packed into this episode! And don’t miss downloading the mullein handout jim prepared just for you; you can find it at https://bit.ly/3I1sIvT.Why should anyone care about this weed? Well, to get started, here are a few occasions when you might reach for mullein:► When you have a cough… especially a specific kind of cough; listen in to get the details► If you’re dealing with stress incontinence… jim shares which part of the mullein plant can be especially helpful► When you need a relaxing nervine… but it doesn’t work this way for everyone, so listen in to hear who’s most likely to be helped by mulleinBy the end of this episode, you’ll know:► Several hints for working with mullein smoke (including as a possible aid to quit smoking tobacco)► The species to grow if you want to harvest mullein flowers (and why you can pick them all without fear that you’re overharvesting)► A toxic look-alike to be aware of before wildcrafting for mullein► Tips for increasing the shelf life of mullein infused oil► How mullein can amplify the effectiveness of other therapies for certain types of pain► and so much more…For those of you who don’t already know him, jim mcdonald is an herbalist in southeast Michigan (that cool state that looks like a mitten you can see from space) where he teaches, sees clients, wildharvests, and concocts a plethora of diverse herbal formulas. His approach to herbalism blends European folk influences mixed up with a bit of 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he tries to spice up with a bit of humor and discretionary irreverence so as not to appear to be too serious about life.  jim hosts the websites www.herbcraft.org and herbcraft.podia.com which list his offerings and convey his thoughts of plants and herbalism. (And if you’ve ever wondered, the lack of capitalization is because the dots over the "j" and the "i" just look super cool together). If you’d like to hear more from jim, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for his website and social media channels. White Pine with Laura Gilmour + White Pine and Rosemary Roasting Salt

White Pine with Laura Gilmour + White Pine and Rosemary Roasting Salt
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that herbalism is about so much more than, “Take this herb for that problem.” To me, reciprocal connection with the web of life is at the heart of herbalism and this episode with Laura Gilmour illustrates that beautifully. You’ll hear stories about white pine, as well as the beautiful ways Laura has developed a relationship with this tree over time. As Laura points out, she isn’t a clinical herbalist and this episode isn’t about giving you lists of ways that white pine can be prescribed as medicine. What it will give you is inspiration for how you can deepen your relationship with the plants that give so generously to us. I also really like Laura’s parting thoughts about finding your way as an herbalist and her wisdom about failure, so don’t miss those.By the end of this episode, you’ll know:► The easiest way Laura’s found to harvest super-nutritious pine pollen► The culinary principle that guided Laura in the creation of her best-selling spice mix► The cultural and historical significance of white pine► How to find your own niche in herbalism► Why embracing failure is so important to your growth as an herbalist► and so much more…For those of you who don’t already know her, Laura Gilmour is a forager, herbalist, and business owner living near Dwight, Ontario, Canada. Laura has a passion for herbalism, naturalist studies, homesteading, and ancestral living skills that connect us to our food and the land in the most human of ways. Laura runs Wild Muskoka Botanicals, which produces artisan wild foods and cocktail products. It exists to reconnect people with the natural world and to promote wellness and fun by incorporating wild plants back into people’s modern lives. She also teaches foraging and herbal medicine classes in the Muskoka area from an animist and relationship-based perspective. If you’d like to hear more from Laura, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for her website and social media channels. Three Ways to Win Over an Herbal Skeptic

Three Ways to Win Over an Herbal Skeptic
In this episode, I’m sharing three ways to win over the herbal naysayers in your life. Here’s the backstory. Last fall, I sent a survey to my newsletter subscribers to ask them what was on their herbal minds. One of the responses I saw most often went something like this: “Help! I love herbs but my (spouse, partner, friend, etc.) doesn’t think they work. How do I get them to see how powerful herbs really are?”You asked. I listened… and here are my three best tips, compiled just for you. After listening in, you’ll know:► Why cultural beliefs about herbs changed dramatically in the first half of the 20th century in the U.S.► Why there’s no single approach to dealing with herbal skeptics (and how to increase the odds of reaching the skeptics in your life)► The one way to almost guarantee you won’t influence your skeptic’s opinion of herbs (and what to do instead)► The power of the pleasure principle and how you can use it with your skeptic► and more…----Get full show notes and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comFor more behind-the-scenes of this podcast, follow @rosaleedelaforet on Instagram! The secret to using herbs successfully begins with knowing who YOU are.
